On Tuesday, a shooting occurred at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, injuring at least four students. The school was quickly surrounded by police as they worked to identify the suspect, who remain at large.
The Dallas police received reports of the shooting shortly after 1 pm.
The Dallas police responded to a shooting spot at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, located at Langdon Road, just after 1 pm on Tuesday. Students were evacuated to the main school building after the shooting was reported.
The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department later confirmed that three of the injured students had gunshot wounds, while a fourth student suffered an injury to his lower body. All four male students, aged 15 to 18, were transported to a hospital. Their injuries are currently being treated, while some are serious but not life-threatening.
“Today, as we all know, something unimaginable has occurred, and quite frankly, this is just becoming way too familiar, and it should not be familiar” said Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde.
The school district confirmed that the gun did not enter the school during the regular student check-in when they go through metal detectors. However, officials did not reveal how the gun got into the school or what happened just before the shots were fired.
“We know who the suspect is, but this is still a developing situation, so I don’t have more details about what led to the shooting,” said Christina Smith, Assistant Chief of District Police.
A video shared online shows an aerial view of Wilmer-Hutchins High School, where students can be seen rushing out of the building in search of safety. The footage also captured many police vehicles surrounding the school. Thankfully, all students were safely reunited with their parents and families. According to police, the school will remain closed for the entire week, but counselors will be available for support during this time.
