The prestigious U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis was put on lockdown on Thursday due to concerns over possible threats to the campus. During this incident, one person was injured and was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where he is now no longer critical, according to Lt. Naweed Lemar, a spokesperson for the academy.
Gunshots were heard in Bancroft Hall, a large dormitory that accommodates more than 1,600 students at the Naval Academy.
While officials have not provided specific details about the threat, according to the news, a former student who was expelled had returned to the campus with a weapon.
Social media posts appear to show a helicopter landing on campus for emergency medical assistance, although the authenticity of these videos remains uncertain. Governor Wes Mooreโs office responded swiftly to the situation, stating, โWe are working with local, state, and federal law enforcement, and currently, there is no credible threat to the Naval Academy. For more information, please contact their public affairs office.โ
The Department of Defense acknowledged the lockdown at the academy but didn’t give further details. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and Maryland State Police are working alongside the Annapolis police to respond to the situation. Officials asked for understanding as they sort through different reports about what happened.
