Trump Announces Plans for Oil, Gas and Mineral Exploration in Greenland

Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has announced plans for large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland, highlighting the island’s potential natural resources and strategic importance.

Trump made the announcement on Wednesday, October 14, through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He claimed that Greenland could contain exceptionally large quantities of easily accessible oil but did not provide details about the companies involved, the investment required or the timeline for exploration.

The announcement comes amid growing US interest in Greenland, which is strategically located in the Arctic between North America and Europe. The island is also believed to hold valuable mineral resources that could attract further investment.

In September, the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a security agreement aimed at easing tensions over the territory. The agreement allows for an expanded US military presence and plans for additional military facilities, while recognising Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Trump has repeatedly highlighted Greenland’s importance to US national security, particularly its role in monitoring potential missile and drone threats. The island’s location also makes it significant for Arctic defence and access to natural resources.

However, the latest announcement has not yet been accompanied by detailed exploration plans. Greenland halted the issuance of new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021 due to environmental and climate concerns. The costs and challenges of operating in the Arctic also remain major obstacles to resource development.
