On Wednesday, Taylor Swift won the most coveted prize of the night at the MTV Video Music Awards, breaking numerous records. The superstar won video of the year for her song “Fortnight,” which features Post Malone.
Swift won seven VMAs this year, pushing her total to 30, tying Beyoncé for the most success of all time. She took the stage to thank her fans and everyone who contributed to the music video’s creation, including Post Malone, Ethan Hawke, and Josh Charles, cinematographer/DP Rodrigo Prieto, and production designer Ethan Tobman.
It was an amazing experience to direct, put together, and write this video. And it’s because of everyone I’ve had the opportunity to work with, she stated in her acceptance speech. The issue is, while this video appears to be terribly melancholy, it was actually the most fun to make.
Swift also mentioned an important person in her life who was constantly on set while filming the music video, encouraging her in between takes.
‘Something I’ll never forget is that after I finished a take and said, ‘cut,’ and we were done with that take, I could always hear someone cheering across the studio where we were shooting it. And that one person was my boyfriend, Travis Kelce’, the singer explained, prompting shouts from the audience. ‘Everything this man touches turns to happiness, fun, and enchantment, so I’d want to thank him for including that into our shoot.’
She concluded, ‘To the fans, I’m constantly looking for ways to express my gratitude for making my life what it is, for making the Eras Tour what it is, and for making The Tortured Poets Department what it is. Thank you for your participation and voting for this award. Thank you so much.’
Taylor shattered many records with her video of the year triumph, extending her record as the most-awarded artist in the category, having previously won for “Bad Blood,” “You Need to Calm Down,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” and “Anti-hero.” She was also the first artist to win the VMA for video of the year three times in row.
Swift has had a successful year overall, having not only won the Grammy for album of the year for Midnights earlier this year, but also releasing her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which topped the Billboard 200 chart for 15 weeks in a row. She’s also been busy playing for fans all around the world on her Eras tour, which concludes in North America later this year.
