Spain Tightens Border Checks on Italy Amid Migration Dispute

Spain will introduce temporary border controls on travelers arriving from Italy by air and sea, escalating a dispute between the two European countries over migration.

The Spanish government said the checks will begin at midnight on Saturday and remain in place until September 7. Travellers arriving from Italy will face passport, nationality and visa checks as Spain responds to what it described as continuing irregular migration pressure.

The move follows Italy’s decision last week to impose its own border controls on people arriving from Spain. Rome introduced the restrictions after a mass influx of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, on July 30. Reuters reported that around 72,000 people were involved in the mass rush into the territory.

Spain had earlier demanded that Italy lift its restrictions by Sunday and warned that it would introduce similar measures if Rome refused. Italy rejected the demand, saying it would not accept what it described as “ultimatums or impositions” from Spain. Rome said its controls would remain at least until August 15.

The Italian government has said it would reconsider its decision only when it is satisfied that there is no significant security or terrorism risk, no fresh wave of migration and no movement of irregular migrants towards European territory.

The dispute comes as European countries continue to debate how to manage irregular migration while maintaining the Schengen system, which allows largely border-free travel between participating countries.

Spain’s decision marks a significant escalation because both countries are now applying additional checks to travellers as part of a disagreement that began with the migration crisis in Ceuta. The situation also highlights the wider political tensions within Europe over responsibility for managing irregular migration and protecting internal borders.

For travellers, the temporary measures mean that people arriving in Spain from Italy should expect additional document checks until the restrictions are lifted or changed.
