Christian Leader And Theologian Voddie Baucham Jr. Dies At 56

Voddie Baucham Jr., a well-known evangelical pastor, theologian, and author, died on September 25, 2025, after suffering an emergency medical incident, according to Founders Ministries. His passing has deeply grieved many in the Christian world, where his bold preaching and firm biblical convictions earned widespread respect. While the ministry confirmed that his death was related to a medical issue, they did not disclose the precise cause.

Baucham’s health had been a matter of concern since early 2021, when he revealed he was diagnosed with severe heart failure. At that time, he described being close to death and undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. He later underwent significant cardiac surgery and continued to manage serious heart problem, necessitating ongoing medical care.

His death is a significant moment in evangelical circles but it also recalls controversy, including a highly publicized GoFundMe campaign launched in 2021 to help cover his medical expenses.

His life trajectory was unconventional for a Christian leader. Raised in a nonreligious home in Los Angeles by his Buddhist mother, Baucham came to faith only in college after meeting a staff member from Campus Crusade. While in college, he also met his future wife, Bridget; they married just six months later. Defying family histories of divorce, they remained married for over three decades and raised nine children; seven of whom they adopted.

Baucham often credited his mother’s stern expectations and resolve for driving his academic success. He played college football at Rice University before transferring to Houston Baptist University, where he earned both a master’s and a doctorate in theology.

Renowned for speaking at churches and conferences, he addressed topics such as cultural engagement, homeschooling, and family worship. His published works include The Ever-Loving Truth, Family Driven Faith, and Expository Apologetics.

Baucham’s devotion to ministry also led him to minister in Zambia in 2006, where he expressed a wish to be laid to rest. Before relocating there in 2015, he served as preaching elder at Grace Family Baptist Church.
