Putin Seeks Stronger Non-Western Alliance At BRICS Summit Amid Ukraine Conflict

Putin Seeks Stronger Non-Western Alliance

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is holding a BRICS summit in Kazan to enhance relationships with non-Western countries and counter Western attempts to economically isolate Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Putin stressed the summit’s attention to “shared values, a unified perspective on progress, and reciprocal respect for each other’s priorities.”

When asked about Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Putin restated his stance on maintaining control over the territories currently under Russian control, such as Crimea and significant portions of the Donbas, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. He insisted that Russia would keep fighting until reaching success, even though he previously mentioned wanting a “lasting peace” in Ukraine for Russia’s safety.

At the same time, the U.S. promised additional military assistance to Ukraine. While in Kyiv, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin disclosed a new aid package of $400 million, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared that the U.S. is readying two more packages valued at up to $800 million each.

The BRICS now involves countries that account for 45% of the global population. Leaders from 22 nations are anticipated to participate in the summit, with China and India having major involvement. Xi Jinping, a strong supporter of Putin, reiterated their economic and military alliance, while Narendra Modi called for the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Brazilian President is recovering from a small brain hemorrhage and will participate in the summit through remote means. BRICS nations that accounts for thirty five percentage of the world economy, are expected to increase their portion to thirty seven percent by 2030.

Putin is utilizing the BRICS summit to strengthen Russia’s connections with emerging markets, in an effort to reduce the economic effects of Western sanctions and promote a multipolar global order with China.
