A tragic helicopter crash occurred over the Hudson River in New York, resulting in the deaths of six people, including three children. The helicopter reportedly went down under unclear circumstances, prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene. Search and rescue operations were launched to locate the wreckage and any potential survivors, but unfortunately, all six passengers on board were confirmed dead.
During a news briefing, Mayor Eric Adams expressed his sorrow, saying, “At this time, all 6 victims have been removed from the water. And sadly, all 6 victims have been pronounced deceased.” He described the incident as heartbreaking.
Rescue teams found the helicopter’s landing gear sticking out of the river near a tunnel entrance, surrounded by several boats that responded to the crash site.
Police from New York and New Jersey, which is across the river from Manhattan, were in the scene, along with firefighters, to assist in the situation.
The river is as deep as 200 feet, and its average temperature is 46 degrees Fahrenheit at this time.
The helicopter, a Bell 206, took off from a downtown Skyport at about 3 pm, carrying a family from Spain consisting of three adults and three children. Rescue teams, including police and firefighters, quickly responded to the scene to search for survivors from the wreckage.
Police and fire service divers raced to pull survivors from the wreckage, he said.
Divers from the New York Police Department managed to rescue four people, while the Fire Department of New York retrieved two additional individuals. They immediately provided life-saving care to those rescued at the scene and on a nearby pier. Tragically, four victims were declared dead at the scene, and two others were taken to local hospitals, where they later passed away due to their injuries.
